Simon would not have been able to turn on the lights in his new voice activated raspberry pi project without the help of a relay. Relays are electromechanical switches which creates a contact when power is supplied to it, you can use it to turn ON lights, fans and other heavy loads with an Arduino, Raspberry Pi or any other controller of choice.

The relay boards use Songle relays which have been found to be exceptionally reliable when compared to the other Chinese brands that we have tested. Precautionary measures such as the use of optical isolators and airgaps have been added. Operating with high voltages is dangerous and care must be taken when handling it to prevent any bodily harm.

While the relays are rated for upto 10A/250VAC for resistive loads we would not recommend using the boards for more than 5A/250VAC or half that for inductive loads, for higher current ratings have a look at our Solid State Relay collection for a safer implementation. The modules are low-level triggered, meaning that you will send a LOW signal to turn ON the relay.
